Why Every RV Buyer Needs an Independent Inspection: Lessons From a Colorado Investigation

Buying an RV is one of the biggest purchases most families will ever make, and the only way to know what you’re really getting is to have it inspected by someone who works for you, not the seller. Most sellers are honest, and they’ll tell you about the problems they know of. But deferred maintenance that hasn’t caused a failure yet doesn’t show up in a walkthrough, and finding it takes a system-by-system test most sellers don’t have the time or tools to do.

A recent Denver7 investigation in Colorado reported on two families who learned this the hard way. Both bought RVs with serious pre-existing damage that wasn’t disclosed at the time of sale. One couple purchased a used fifth wheel they were told was in excellent condition, only to have an independent technician find structural frame damage a few weeks later. Both families won large court judgments, and both may never collect. You can read the original investigation and the follow-up report, in which RV owners from across the country contacted Denver7 with similar stories of their own.

Behind these stories are problems that are common across the RV industry: buyers with no easy way to verify what they’re purchasing, and owners with no good options when repairs are needed. Here is what every RV owner can take from these stories, and what RV Help is doing to help with each.

Lesson 1: Get an independent inspection before you buy

RV Help connects buyers with mobile inspectors certified by the NRVIA (National RV Inspectors Association). They travel to wherever the RV is located, whether that’s a dealer lot, a private seller’s driveway, or a storage facility, and follow a standardized process that covers every major system: frame and chassis, roof and seals, slide-outs, electrical, plumbing, propane, appliances, tires and brakes, and any evidence of water damage.

A full inspection typically takes six to eight hours, and the inspector tests each system rather than just looking at it. You get a detailed written report with photos documenting what was found. With it, you can buy with confidence, negotiate based on documented issues, or walk away.

This applies to new RVs as well as used ones. New units can be damaged in transport or on the lot, and factory defects are not uncommon.

Good inspectors can be hard to find on your own. Many travel full-time, so they don’t show up in a local search. On RV Help, you can search for certified inspectors near you or near the RV you’re considering, compare profiles and reviews, and request quotes from several inspectors before choosing one.

Lesson 2: Research before you hire

Every inspector and technician on RV Help has their credentials verified before their listing goes live. When you hire through RV Help, you know you’re working with someone who has completed training through the NRVTA, the RVTI, or another reputable organization.

Lesson 3: Don’t rely on one opinion

Each provider profile includes reviews from RV owners who have used their services. Reviews help you choose someone with a track record, and they hold providers accountable for the quality of their work.

Lesson 4: Keep up with your RV’s maintenance

Many of the problems that surface after a sale started as routine maintenance nobody got around to. Roof seals, slide seals, bearings, and water heaters all have service intervals, and skipping them is how small issues turn into structural ones. The RV Help app includes a free maintenance tracker with default schedules for the tasks every RV needs, reminders when they’re due, and the option to add your own. And when a task calls for a professional, a mobile technician on RV Help comes to your RV, so routine service doesn’t mean losing your rig to a service center for weeks.

Lesson 5: Keep A record of your RV’s history

Part of the problem in these stories is that an RV’s history usually lives in nobody’s records. When it’s your turn to sell, a documented service history is what separates your RV from one with an unknown past. The RV Help app includes a free maintenance tracker where you can log repairs, service, and inspections, and a virtual glovebox for keeping your purchase paperwork, warranties, inspection reports, and receipts in one place. That record supports warranty claims while you own the RV, and when you sell it, it shows the next buyer exactly what’s been done and when.

Lesson 6: Warranty repairs don’t have to mean a dealer’s waiting list

Warranty repairs are one of the biggest sources of frustration in the RV industry, for owners and manufacturers alike. Dealer service departments are backed up, and an RV under warranty can sit for weeks or months waiting for a covered repair. RV Help is working with manufacturers to change that by dispatching their warranty jobs to certified mobile technicians who go to the owner’s RV. The repair gets done where the RV is parked, the owner gets back on the road sooner, and the manufacturer has a way to take care of its customers that doesn’t depend on a dealer’s schedule.
